What is the Fisherman Aesthetic?

By Elizabeth Montfort

If your FYP looks anything like mine, you’ve probably been inundated with the Fisherman Aesthetic. As someone who usually dislikes fast fashion trends and fleeting style cycles, here’s my take: A trend is only bad if you don’t commit to it — otherwise, it’s an aesthetic. It becomes part of who you are, something timeless rather than temporary.

Bluntly put: trends — bad, aesthetics — good.

For me, the Coastal Granddaughter (or Grandmother) aesthetic has always been a natural fit. It requires just a few staple pieces and never goes out of style. I can wear the same thing at 22 or 65, which is exactly why I love it. I invest in pieces that will last – which does not mean expensive. There is this misconception that pieces that last mean they are expensive – that is simply not true. You can find quality pieces just by checking the fabric composition — yes, even on Amazon. Anyone claiming that luxury is the only way to get long-lasting clothing is either misinformed or trying to compensate for something…

Because of my love of staple pieces that can be re-worn in different ways, I'm already a fan of the fisherman aesthetic. While it might seem like a brand-new trend that requires a whole new wardrobe, I vehemently disagree. If you already have classic coastal pieces, it’s all about styling them differently.

The essence of this look is effortless — like you’re perfectly at home walking through the fog on a misty New England morning. It’s an ideal choice if the classic Coastal Granddaughter aesthetic feels a bit too tomboyish for you, or if you’re simply looking to switch things up from your usual blue-and-white staples.

If I were building an entirely new wardrobe centered around the Fisherman Aesthetic, here’s exactly what I’d choose — and why I believe these pieces are timeless investments for any season. (I included affiliate links ( I earn a commission if you purchase anything) below, but feel free to just use this as inspo)

The Hunter Boot

Hunter boots have long been a staple in both English and New England fashion — especially the classic green pair. They’re truly a year-round essential. If you’re from the Northeast, you know that not only does it get incredibly rainy, but the ground also turns into a muddy mess. I firmly believe that a little mud should never be an excuse to stay inside or skip a walk with your dog, which is why investing in a durable, long-lasting pair of boots is key. I got mine years ago, and they still make an appearance at the first sign of rain or even the slightest bit of mud.

While Hunter boots are essential for the Fisherman Aesthetic, their versatility makes them a great investment for a variety of styles. Whether you’re leaning into a preppy look, Coastal Cowgirl, Grandmillennial, or even an equestrian or cottagecore vibe, these boots seamlessly fit into any wardrobe

A Lobster Sweater

I absolutely LOVE a cute lobster sweater—I wear mine on repeat. It’s one of those pieces that can be dressed up or down and works effortlessly with so many different looks. No matter the season, if you’re in New England, this sweater is always the vibe. The only difference? In the summer, you pair it with a tank top; in the winter, you layer it over a turtleneck. Timeless, cozy, and undeniably coastal!

Chunky Cream Sweater

This one is so obvious it almost hurts. I’ve never understood how anyone could not own a chunky cream sweater — it’s the ultimate staple of all staples. It works with any outfit, in any season (yes, even summer — New England nights get chilly!), and it’s effortlessly cozy with zero downsides. It’s a must-have for the Fisherman Aesthetic, but honestly, it fits into just about any style. I can’t imagine ever choosing a sweatshirt over a comfy, oversized knit. It’s just that easy.

Boxers

For the past few years, boxers have been trending as everyday wear — and for good reason. They’re incredibly comfy (way more than your typical jean shorts) and surprisingly easy to style. Just throw on a tank top and a sweater — boom, done.

But why did I add them to the timeless staples list? Simple. Even if you eventually feel less comfortable wearing them out or to the beach, they’ll always be perfect as lounge shorts or pajamas at home. They’re soft, breathable (especially if you size up like I do), and usually way cheaper than women’s shorts — because, of course, the pink tax.

Cool T Shirt

I firmly believe that you can never have too many cool t-shirts, and the Fisherman Aesthetic is the perfect excuse to finally wear those thrifted or graphic tees with an aquatic vibe. Just layer it up or pair it with boxers, and you’re good to go — effortless, comfortable, and perfectly on theme.
